_ FCO DNSBX-O001, Potential for Electrical Short in the Transformer ______________________________________________________________________________ | DIGITAL FCO CATEGORY PAGE 1 | | [O] OF 4 | |______________________________________________________________________________| | FIELD CHANGE ORDER NUMBER: DNSBX-O001 | |______________________________________________________________________________| | APPLICABILITY: This is an "O" coded FCO and it should be installed on all | | DECnis 600 platforms: DNSBX-AD, DNSBA-BC/BD, DNSEA-BC/BD, DNSEB-BC/BD, | | DNSEC-BC/BD, DNSED-BC/BD, DNSEE-BC/BD, DNSEF-EE/BD, DNSBB-BC/BD, DNSBD-BC/BD.| | This FCO will replace the H7720-AA (30-36324-01) with revision "C01". | |______________________________________________________________________________| | PROBLEM & SYMPTOM: Under certain failure modes, there are indications for | | a potential cause of an electrical short in the transformer. This could | | result in the power supply overheating. The symptom is an unexpected failure | | of the device due to loss of power. This may be accompanied by release of | | smoke. This is not a safety hazard. (Continued on Page 2) | |______________________________________________________________________________| | SOLUTION: The solution for this problem is to replace every power supply | | H7720-AA below revision C01 with revision C01 or higher. However, because | | the DECNIS 600 is a key high-end networking product, FCO implementation will | | need to be scheduled in advance with customers. The customer and Field | | Service will need to agree and schedule a "non-critical" time to have the | | PSU replaced. | ________________________________________________________________________________ | QUICK CHECK: All good and fully tested PSUs will be at revision C01 or | | higher. All "suspect" PSUs will be at lower revisions; either A01, B01, B02 | | or B03. The revision number is situated immediately under the AC input | | socket. | |______________________________________________________________________________| | PRE/CO-REQUISITE FCO: N/A | MFIT HRS | | | 1.0 | |___________________________________________________________________|__________| | TOOL/TEST EQUIPMENT: Other than 2 flat-head screwdrivers (1 small, 1 large), | | no special tools or equipment are needed. | |______________________________________________________________________________| | FCO PARTS INFORMATION | |______________________________________________________________________________| | FCO KIT NO. | DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS | |______________|_______________________________________________________________| |EQ-01683-01 |30-36324-01 Power Supply, Rev C01 | | | | |FA-05020-01 |FIELD APPLICATION (FA) DOCUMENT | | | | |______________|_______________________________________________________________| | FCO CHARGING INFORMATION (See Last Page) | |______________________________________________________________________________| | APPROVALS | |______________________________________________________________________________| |TECH. The failures are caused by an electrical short in the transformer, which results in the power supply overheating. The 30-36324-01 power supply is manufactured by ASTEC Corporation. The DC/DC converter component of the power supply undergoes hipot testing as part of the manufacturing process. This testing can result in "carbonization" of the transformer windings within the DC/DC converter, which eventually causes the failure. No system warning is generated by the DECNIS system. Therefore, the DECNIS 600 shuts down without prior notice. The failure can occur at any time after the product is placed in service. Digital Product Safety has determined that the DECNIS 600 enclosure effectively contains the malfunction, and that the failures do not constitute a safety hazard. +---------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | FCO DNSBX-O001 | D | i | g | i | t | a | l | | | | | | | | | | | PAGE 3 OF 4 +---------------------------+ | _________________________________|______________________________________ INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO INSTALL THE DNSBX-O001 FCO *************************************************************** * *** CAUTION *** * * * * WEAR A STATIC WRIST STRAP AND USE A STATIC MAT. * * * * This module, as all other modules, contains electrostatic * * discharge sensitive devices (ESDS). The use of the VELOSTAT * * kit is essential to prevent damage which may not be noticed * * immediately. * * * *************************************************************** 1. Refer to Chapter 11 of the "DECnis 600 Service Manual" (EK-A0543-IN) for instruction on how to remove and replace the parts needed for this FCO. Refer to Chapter 4 for testing the installed system. 2. Power down the system and disconnect power cord from wall outlet. 3. Attach the static protection equipment. 4. Remove the protective cover. 5. Loosen the screw and remove the power supply unit from the system. 6. Install EQ-01683-01 and reverse the preceding steps. *** Before powering up the DECnis 600 make sure that all cards are seated correctly. 7. Power up the system. *** If the system passes the power-up self test, and loads and runs the DECnis 600 software successfully, the FCO is complete. 8. Return the old power supply for upgrade. 9. Report this FCO activity on the LARS form in the "Fail Area/Module/ FCO/Comments" column as follows: FCO DNSBX-O001.
