PROBLEM: "blocks Lost" or "postion Lost" error on Backup/Verify
operation during VMS Backup. Acknowledge not set at start of
transfer. 

FIELD EFFECTIVITY: Rework all TA81 Transports with STI Controller
Modules at (Vendor) P/N 77042145 and below. All TA81 Option
Revision Level A1, B1, and C1. This FCO incorporates ECO's
TA81-SH002 and TA81-SH003. 

QUICK CHECK: ROM in location G2 on STI Interface board at
STI0908-1 P/N 77028485.

TA81-F002

DEC 91 - PROBLEM: When performing a backup 
operation, the customer can experience in-
termittent position lost errors or serious
exception errors. Position lost errors can
be determined in errorlog by status event
code of 11, serious exception errors can be
identified by status event code of 12. A
failure to write or retry a tape mark will
be identified in the errorlog extended sense
data info as a write tape mark check error,
byte 9 of the extended sense data will in-
dicate status of 08.

FIELD EFFECTIVITY: This FCO applies to TA81
tape drives that experience position lost
errors or serious exception errors caused
by a failure to write or tetry written tape
marks while performing a backup operation.
                                             
SOLUTION: Replace the STI interface module 
(29-25345-00) below revision D01. 

QUICK CHECK: Rev. D01 and below do not feature 
the microcode changes.

The DEC on-site labor charge will be the time
required to install and test the FCO at the
then current hourly rate.
