The VAX 11/725 will follow the same process as the VAX 11/730. The kernel modules (M8390, M8391, M8394) and the memory (M8750) are the same as the 11/730; there is a new variation of the 70-18080 backplane for the 11/725. There is also a new variation of the M8391 module - M8391-YA, which will begin shipping from manufacturing in Q1FY85. Note that the M8391-YA is backwards compatible with M8391s.. M8391s will continue to be supported in the field. NO EFFORT SHOULD BE MADE TO REPLACE M8391s WITH M8391-YAs. -YA variant ONLY required for battery backup on the 11/730 SBB - battery backup is not offered on the 11/725 and, therefore, is not an issue here. The DEUNA and RC25 disk drive have been added. Note that all 11/725s will contain the RC25, but may not contain the DEUNA, DMF32 or KC730. See section 5 - Option Revision History - for detailed information on these options. Revision control structure as outlined in this document: 11/725 System | ------------------------------------------------------------------------ | | | | | | | | | KERNEL FP730 DMF32 RC25 DEUNA KC730 MICROCODE VMS DIAG. KA730 MS730 TU58-XA TU58-XB Revision Matrix (DEC Standard 068) will be implemented on the 11/725, but this will not happen by FCS. Revision Matrix puts revision information of each part and combination of parts (i.e. unit) under ECO control. RM (Revision Matrix) documents will be distributed via microfiche and hard copy, as this document is done today. Until RM documents for the 11/725 are available, CSSE will continue to maintain and distribute compatibility information via this document. 1.1 SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION The VAX LIBRARY, which should be available from your local fiche librarian, has 11/730 and 11/725 related documentation, including diagnostics and microcode information. 1.2 KERNEL AND OPTIONS DESCRIPTIONS The 11/725 kernel (as defined below), microcode and options (also listed below) will all have a separate revision level and history, to be tracked in this document. -3- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kernel KA730 M8390 Data Path Module M8391 Memory Controller -or- M8391-YA Memory Controller M8394 Writeable Control Store 70-18080-01 Backplane Assembly MS730 - MS750-CA 1 mb Array Module TU58-XB - 54-13489 TU58 Serial Module TU58-XA - 70-15510 TU58 Drive Assembly ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FP730 M8389 Floating Point Module ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DMF32 54-14459 I/O Distribution Panel M8396 COMBO Module ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- KC730 23-058F2 23-059F2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DEUNA M7792 Port Module M7793 Link Module ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RC25 54-14645 Drive Card 54-14636 Control Board 54-15160 Power Supply 70-21127-01 Chassis Assy 12-18668-00 Blower (Centrifigal) 70-20266-01 Bezel Assy ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MICROCODE BE-T173*-ME TU58 tape ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.0 REVISION CRITERIA Any changes to the hardware, that affects performance or operation of the system that is detectable by the diagnostics and operating system software can change an option (unit) revision level - i.e. a functional change. Modifications to cables, power subsystems, ventilation equipment, or mechanical design should not cause a change to the unit revision level. Only a functional change to the kernel affects the revision of the 11/725 system. The remaining options listed on the revision chart in section 1.0 will be tracked for compatibility purposes. Part (or circuit schematic) revision is noted on each module by either a brady marker or a red stamp on the end of the module handle. If both are present, the brady marker should be the latest revision. (It is wise to do a quick check, if possible, to insure that this is correct!) Compatible part (or circuit schematic) revisions for each option (unit) are separated by commas in all revision charts in this document. Any special requirements, i.e. specific revisions for certain configurations, etc., will be noted in the revision summary section following the chart. Part, CS and option revisions noted are all minimum revisions. -4- 2.1 VAX 11/725 SYSTEM IDENTIFICATION REGISTER (SID) The 11/725 system identification register is a read-only constant register that specifies the processor type and the microcode revision, and is a soft register residing in the microcode. The entire SID register is included in the error log. The type field may be used by software to distinguish processor specific field. SID REGISTER FORMAT - HEX +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | 03 | | | 39 | +---------------------------------------------------------------+ SYSTEM TYPE= MICROCODE REV=57 (39 HEX) To read the system I.D register you would type: >>>E/I The system revision 00 would respond: M 0000003E 03000039 >>> 2.2 VAX 11/725 REVISION LABEL A unit revision label was installed on the 11/725 cabinet which contains the revision of the major options (units) residing in the CPU. This label was marked in manufacturing before the 11/725 was shipped and should only be updated by the field service technician when FCOs are installed. FCO document contained instructions to do this. An example of the Revision Label follows: +-------------------------------------------------+ |d|i|g|i|t|a|l| 11/725 UNIT REVISION | |-------------------------------------------------| | DATE | | | | | | | | | |INSTALLED| | | | | | | | | | |6/84| | | | | | | | |-------------------------------------------------| | KA730 | 02 | | | | | | | | |-------------------------------------------------| | MS730 | 00 | | | | | | | | |-------------------------------------------------| | FP730 | 00 | | | | | | | | |-------------------------------------------------| | DMF32 | 02 | | | | | | | | |-------------------------------------------------| | | | | | | | | | | |-------------------------------------------------| | | | | | | | | | | +-------------------------------------------------+ -5- 3.0 11/725 SYSTEM REVISION HISTORY The following chart summarizes the compatible option revisions, software, microcode and diagnostic revision levels for each system revision. M8391 - Rev J2 -Same as above on desocketed boards. or M8391-YA -Rev A1 -Released to support Battery Backup on the 730 SBB only (see note below). M8391-YA -Rev B1 -Fixes corrupted bank of main memory which results when doing unaligned longword transfers. NOTE: The M8391-YA may be found in any KA730 but is required only to support Battery Backup in the 11/730 System Building Block configuration. (See 11730 Revision Control Document for more detail.) M8394 - Rev K1 - R90 is 150K (Reset signal violates 8085 spec, causing the 8085 to sometimes not start up on power up). Rev K2- Change to correct part rev Rev K3- (crystal oscillator start up time too long - change spec - new part no. is 21-20372-02) Rev K4- Create new etch to eliminate wires. Rev K5- Change 21-20372-02 to 21-20372-05 due to purchasing considerations. * VMS Minimum VMS Version is 3.5 VMS Version 4.X requires diagnostic Release 18 (minimum). * DIAGNOSTICS Same as for the 11/730; changes/additional diagnostics for the 11/725 are in Release 15 - March 1984. Note that there is currently a problem with DUCT on the 11/725 when using an RC25 diagnostic pack (BK-T687*-DE). To get duct to work, change the label on the RC25 diagnostic pack to "VAXPAX" by using the VMS command "Set volume/label=VAXPAX DUA0" When finished with DUCT, be sure to reset the label back to CRDPACK so that CRDs will work properly. -7- * MICROCODE Version 57 supports 11/725 - BE-T173I-ME. Early 11/725s shipped with P/N BE-T173G-ME. There is no difference between these tapes. Note that CRDs won't work with BE-T173H-ME. KA730 - 2A REVISION SUMMARY --------------------------- This revision of the KA730 is the same as Revision 02 with the exception of the M8391-YA module in place of the M8391.
