_ DEC-O-LOG for KN15-BA _ DOL, KN15-BA-O002, Interaction between TURBOchannel DMA reads and I/O writes DEC 93 - PROBLEM: The problem manifests itself as an interaction between TURBOchannel DMA reads and conflicted I/O writes, and results in the possibility of a system hanging forever. The system will require a hard reset to clear this system hang. All this is invis ible to the software, since conflicts on the TURBO channel are purely a hardware feature. FIELD EFFECTIVITY: This is an as needed FCO and should only be used on DEC 3000 AXP Model 400/400S systems that meet ALL the following crite ria: 1. The system is exhibiting the symptoms described below. 2. The system module (54-21149-02) is below revision level H09 for D etch modules or H10 for F etch mod ules. 3. Any options that utilize the TURBOchannel DMA reads feature, such as: TNVRAM JV2 PMAG-D PMAGB-EA DEFTA KZTSA-AA PMAGB-DA PMAGB-FA NOTE: This option list is not all inclusive. Some 3rd party TURBOchannel options may also contribute to this problem SOLUTION: The solution for this problem is to re place the system module (54-21149-02) with a new sys tem module - which will be, at a minimum, revision H09 D etch, or H10 F etch. QUICK CHECK: The system module (54-21149-02) is at revision level H09 for D etch or H10 for F etch modules and the system complies with the 3 criteria listed above. This FCO is for all DEC3000/* Alpha AXP Workstations shipped beginning December 1992 until November 1, 1993, plus all DEC 3000 Model 600 and 600S systems shipped before February 16, 1994. PROBLEM & SYMPTOM: There is an EXTREMELY REMOTE possibility that in a below normal temperature environment, a SCSI controller transaction error could occur. Through extensive testing below normal operating temperatures, all observed occurrences of this condition have resulted in a detected illegal command. Because this condition in THEORY could cause data corruption we have supplied a MUP which will fix this condition. SOLUTION: Installation of this MUP will provide enhanced parity protection on SCSI controller transactions by programming parity pass through instead of parity generation in the SCSI controller chip(s).
