These packs can be identified by removing the bottom protective cover and examining the underside of the pack for a stick-on Serial Number Label. This Label will be stamped with a Manufacturing date code. The date codes that are affected are as follows: ZGOK5 ZGOL5 ZGOA6 ZGOB6 ZGOC6 ********************************************************* * NOTE: * * ONLY PACKS WITH THESE DATE CODES ARE AFFECTED! * * PACKS MANUFACTURED BY OTHER VENDORS DO NOT HAVE A * * A DATE CODE WITH THE PREFIX OF "ZGO". * ********************************************************* ************************************************************** * ****** CAUTION ****** * * DUE TO THE FACT THAT A HEAD CRASH MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED * * BY THE DEFECTIVE MEDIA (WHICH WILL REQUIRE THAT THE * * HEADS BE REPLACED), IT IS STRONGLY ADVISED THAT ONLY * * TRAINED SERVICE PERSONNEL PERFORM THIS FCO IMPLEMENTATION.* ************************************************************** ************************************************************** * NOTE: * * IF THE CUSTOMER HAS A REQUIREMENT TO COPY DATA FROM THE * * DEFECTIVE PACK TO THE REPLACEMENT PACK, THE COPY AND * * VERIFICATION SHOULD BE ACCOMPLISHED BEFORE THE FE LEAVES * * THE SITE. * ************************************************************** HEAD CRASHES CAUSED BY DEFECTIVE CARTRIDGES. If it is known that a head crash has resulted from the customers use of a defective cartridge (from specific date code range indicated in this FCO), or if there is strong evidence of same, DEC will replace the cartridge as well as the heads and provide labor free of charge. Engineers should charge all labor and parts to Warranty (see attached LARS form). _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | FCO RL01K-R001 | | | | | | | | | |d|i|g|i|t|a|l| | PAGE 3 OF 10 |_|_|_|_|_|_|_| | | _______________________________|_________________________________________ *** EXCEPTIONS *** If the customer has a defective pack and requires a replacement pack but cannot surrender said Pack for security reasons (etc.) the Field Engineer should record the serial number of the defective pack on a LARS Report and request that the customer dispose of the pack (after replacement has been provided) in his or her presence. ********************************************************************* * NOTE * * It should be emphasized to the customer that DEFECTIVE PACKS * * SHOULD FOR NO REASON BE REUSED IN THE FUTURE. * * * ********************************************************************* FCO REWORK PROCEDURE: ***************************************************************** * ****** CAUTION ****** * * DUE TO THE FACT THAT A HEAD CRASH MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED * * BY THE DEFECTIVE MEDIA (WHICH WILL REQUIRE THAT THE * * HEADS BE REPLACED), IT IS STRONGLY ADVISED THAT ONLY * * TRAINED SERVICE PERSONNEL PERFORM THIS FCO IMPLEMENTATION. * * * * ****** NOTE ****** * * INSURE THAT THE CUSTOMER HAS COPIED AND VERIFIED THE DATA * * FROM THE PACK(S) TO BE RETURNED, TO ANOTHER PACK(S) BEFORE * * REMOVING THE DEFECTIVE PACK(S) FROM THE CUSTOMERS SITE. * * * ***************************************************************** FOR PACKS THAT MAY BE MOUNTED IN AN RL01 DISK DRIVE, FOLLOW THESE PROCEDURES FOR GAINING ACCESS AND REMOVAL OF THE PACK(S): 1. If the drive is currently mounted on an operational system, have the customer either dismount the drive or shut the system software down. Before attempting to remove any pack from an operational drive, be sure that the customer has given approval. 2. If the "Load" switch on the front panel is currently depressed, the pack may be spinning. Pushing the "Load" switch should release the switch from the depressed position, allowing the drive to spin- down. If the "LIGHT" in the switch was previously "OFF", after the switch is released it should "LIGHT" (turn on) within a minute to a minute and a half (assuming the lamp is not burnt out). _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | FCO RL01K-R001 | | | | | | | | | |d|i|g|i|t|a|l| | PAGE 4 OF 10 |_|_|_|_|_|_|_| | | _______________________________|_________________________________________ 3. After having waited a minute and a half, the locking solenoid, which prevents the access cover from being opened while the drive is operational, will release allowing the access cover Latch Slide to be moved toward the rear of the drive, which will allow the access cover to be raised. ******************************************************** * NOTE * * * * THE LATCH SLIDE SHOULD MOVE EASILY TOWARD THE REAR * * OF THE MACHINE, WHEN THE DRIVE IS SPUN DOWN AND THE * * ACCESS COVER HAS BEEN UNLOCKED. * * * * DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FORCE THE LATCH SLIDE TOWARD THE * * REAR OF THE MACHINE AS DAMAGE TO THE LATCH COULD * * OCCUR. * * * * IF THE LATCH WILL NOT MOVE EASILY CONSULT THE RL01 * * SERVICE PROCEDURES MANUAL FOR INSTRUCTIONS. * ******************************************************** When the Access Cover has been raised, remove the Plastic Cartridge Protective Cover (which is setting on top of the Cartridge in the drive) and set it aside. 4. With your right hand thumb, slide the Pack Release Latch to the left and hold it in that position as you grasp the Pack Handle with the fingers of the right hand, raise the Pack Handle to the verticle position. You will feel the pack release from the spindle. By the handle, gently pull the pack straight up out of the Disk Shroud. 5. Holding the Pack (by the handle) in your right hand, turn it upside-down and on the under-side of the pack you will find a serial number label. Verify that the date-code on this label is within the range of those listed in this FCO. If the date-code on the Pack does not fall within the range of those listed in this FCO, reinstall the Pack by reversing the above steps and proceed to Step 10. ******************************************************** * NOTE * * IF THE CUSTOMER CANNOT RELEASE THE PACK TO BE * * RETURNED TO DEC, RECORD (ON THE LARS FORM) THE * * SERIAL NUMBER WHICH IS PRINTED ON THE SERIAL NUMBER * * TAG ON THE UNDER-SIDE OF THE PACK. * ******************************************************** _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | FCO RL01K-R001 | | | | | | | | | |d|i|g|i|t|a|l| | PAGE 5 OF 10 |_|_|_|_|_|_|_| | | _______________________________|_________________________________________ Continuing to hold the pack by the handle, place the Protective Cover on the under-side of the pack and then lower the handle to the horizontal position, which will secure the Protective cover to the pack. 6. If the customer has the original packing container, place the Cartridge in the container and return to Branch Logistics for return processing. If the Customer does not have the original container, take extra care to make sure no damage is done to the Cartridge, and return to Branch Logistics for return processing. ******************************************************** * NOTE * * IF THE CUSTOMER CANNOT RELEASE THE PACK TO BE * * RETURNED TO DEC (FOR SECURITY REASONS), ASK THE * * CUSTOMER TO DISPOSE OF THE PACK IN YOUR PRESENCE. * ******************************************************** 7. With the Access Cover open and no Cartridge installed in the drive, inspect the Read/Write Heads for oxide build-up (which would indicate a Head Crash has occurred) as follows: a) Using an Inspection Mirror (available in the Field Service Tool Kit DEC P/N 29-19663) look at the upper and lower head surfaces. b) Oxide build-up can be recognized by brown streaking or discoloration of the white head surfaces. c) If oxide build-up is present on the heads proceed to step 8, otherwise proceed to step 9. 8. Head replacement: ******************************************************** * NOTE * * DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPLACE THE HEADS UNLESS YOU ARE * * TRAINED TO DO SO. * ******************************************************** Refer to RL01/RL02 TECHNICAL MANUAL VOLUME II SERVICE PROCEDURES EK-RL122-TM-002, PARAGRAPH E.7, HEAD INSTALLATION. OR Refer to RL01/RL02 POCKET SERVICE GUIDE, EK-RL012-PG-005 PARAGRAPH 9.22, HEAD REPLACEMENT. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | FCO RL01K-R001 | | | | | | | | | |d|i|g|i|t|a|l| | PAGE 6 OF 10 |_|_|_|_|_|_|_| | | _______________________________|________________________________________ 9. Give the replacement Cartridge to the customer. ***************************************************************** * NOTE: * * AT THE TIME OF DELIVERING THE FCO KIT(S) TO THE CUSTOMER, * * THE CUSTOMER SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO CHECK OUT THE NEW * * PACK(S) AT THEIR EARLIEST OPPORTUNITY. * * * * IF THE CUSTOMER REQUIRES VERIFICATION OF NEW PACK PRIOR TO * * THE FIELD ENGINEER LEAVING SITE, ONE PASS OF THE DISK DRIVE * * DIAGNOSTIC CZRLFB0 SHOULD BE RUN. * ***************************************************************** 10. Fill out LARS Form as attached example and the Site Management Guide (when applicable). 11.
